Researching ‘Mixed-Race’ Male Experiences in Education in the United Kingdom

Hi all,

I’m a researcher from The University of Leeds (UK) based in the Centre for Ethnicity and Racism studies.

I’m currently carrying out research into ‘mixed-race’ male experiences in education in the UK. I’m in contact with a couple of researchers in the US and hopefully may develop some comparative work to improve experiences in both the US and the UK.

Whilst ‘black’ male education experiences are heavily theorised there is an absence of research into mixed-race male education…

I’m looking for male participants aged between 18-32 who identify as being of Black African Caribbean and White British parentage.

The research will be an interview (no more than 30 minutes), the interview arrangements will be down to interviewee preferences, I’m open to use digital methods such as Skype, Instant messaging etc… I’m also more than happy to conduct face-to-face interviews.. I’m based in Manchester and Leeds areas.

The interview will unstructured and would allow you to share your experiences and take the conversation where you want to.

I am specifically looking for mixed Asian American mothers who have adult children who are at least 18 years of age or older. I would also like to interview these adult children.

The third annual convention of the Black German Heritage and Research Association (formerly the Black German Cultural Society NJ) will be held on August 8-11, 2013, at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. This year’s convention will focus on Black Germans in Diaspora. The conference will feature a keynote address by Maisha Eggers, Professor of Childhood and Diversity Studies at the University of Magdeburg, a screening of the 1952 film “Toxi” at the Amherst Cinema, with an introduction and Q & A by Professor Angelica Fenner of the University of Toronto, author of “Race Under Reconstruction in German Cinema” (2011), and presentations by guest artists Sharon Dodua Otoo and Sandrine Micossé-Aikins, editors of “The Little Book of Big Visions: How To Be an Artist and Revolutionize the World,” published by the Berlin publishers Edition Assemblage in October 2012.

The BGHRA Review Committee invites proposals for papers that engage the multiplicity and diversity of the experiences of Blacks of German heritage and on Blackness in Germany. The Chowan Discovery Group is inviting academics to partner with us to study the Winton Triangle.

The Triangle is a 260 year-old mixed race community of landowners in central Hertford County. Around 1960, its population was in the hundreds, and the land dimensions are 8 by 10 miles from east to west, and 8 miles from north to south with over 20 roads and streets. The Chowan Discovery Group has collected photographs, documents, interviews, books and maps. However, demographic and economic studies are needed. The incomes and occupations of Winton Triangle people were diverse, and the land ownership is estimated at over 20 square miles.

An Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Symposium on Critical Mixed Race Studies

The Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies (CERS) at the University of Leeds invites postgraduate research students to participate in a one-day symposium which will be held on 18 May 2013. The aim of this symposium is to explore and consider what constitutes Critical Mixed Race Studies as an emerging field of intellectual enquiry.

Critical Mixed Race Studies (CMRS) is a rapidly growing body of scholarship and through the continued challenging of essentialized conceptions of ‘race’ and ethnicity, CMRS becomes an emerging paradigm for examining the politics of ‘race’, racism and representation. CMRS can be defined as “the transracial, transdisciplinary, and transnational critical analysis of the institutionalization of social, cultural, and political orders based on dominant conceptions of race. CMRS emphasizes the mutability of race and the porosity of racial boundaries in order to critique processes of racialization and social stratification based on race. CMRS addresses local and global systemic injustices rooted in systems of racialization” (Critical Mixed Race Studies Association). In this transnational, interdisciplinary symposium, we seek to explore these components through the lens of intersectionalities in individual experience, theorising and activism.

This symposium is open to postgraduate researchers across a range of disciplines whose work is pertinent to and reflected within the broad field of Critical Mixed Race Studies. We invite papers that address this theme and hope to welcome national and international postgraduate research students from a wide range of disciplines.

Parenting in Multiracial Families

My name is Chloe Jhangiani and I am a second year master’s social work student conducting research for my thesis at Smith College School for Social Work. I am recruiting multiracial adults with racial heritage from two or more racial groups to participate on a study about how their parents approached race and racism when they were children.  Through this study, I hope to better understand how multiracial individuals are helped to cope with the stressors of being a multiracial individual.  My hope is that this research can help inform parents, clinicians, and educators on the complexities of the multiracial experience.

The study takes approximately 20-30 minutes and involves answering a series of questions on a secure online survey site.  Answers to the survey questions are anonymous. Participation in this study is voluntary and you can withdraw at any time until you submit the survey. This study has been approved by the Smith College School for Social work Human Subjects Review Committee.

“What is Critical Mixed Race Studies?”

 
Papers that were presented at the November 1-4, 2012 Critical Mixed Race Studies Conference “What is Critical Mixed Race Studies?” are invited for revision and submission for the second issue of JCMRS. We also welcome papers that speak to specialized research, pedagogical, or community-based interests. JCMRS encourages both established and emerging scholars, including graduate students and faculty, to submit articles throughout the year. Articles will be considered for publication on the basis of their contributions to important and current discussions in mixed race studies, and their scholarly competence and originality.

The primary criterion for selection will be the quality of the paper, not its connection to the 2012 conference theme. Papers might consider the ways different disciplines approach or provide methodologies for critical analyses of mixed race issues. Submission might also consider the following areas as related to Critical Mixed Race Studies:

Submission Deadline: Extended to March 1, 2013

Submission Guidelines: Article manuscripts should range between 15-30 double-spaced pages, Times New Roman 12-point font, including notes and works cited, must follow the Chicago Manual of Style, and include an abstract (not to exceed 250 words).
